While the ABC site looks like a lot of the other network sites in this review, it just doesn’t measure up in the same way. The ABC site not only has a dismal selection of shows for you to watch, but it makes the process harder than it needs to be.
Part of the reason that ABC is more complicated is that you must use their special video player. You must download and install it before watching episodes. This creates more problems, which isn’t necessary because so many other sites show full videos without requiring a special software download.
ABC has separate pages for each of its shows, so it’s not hard to find what you’re looking for if you have a specific favorite. However, finding full episodes of that show is much more difficult. Only a portion of those shows are available in full episodes on the ABC site; the rest only have short clips and promos.
The ABC does have one strength: all the seasons of Lost are available for viewing in High Definition. There are a lot of fans who would get excited about being able to rewatch episodes at any time. Unfortunately, the content for the other shows isn’t nearly so comprehensive, usually only offering a half dozen episodes. This causes serious problems for ABC because there are so many other sites that have broader content libraries.
ABC makes it easy to find full episodes because there is a “Full Episodes” link right on the home page. This link allows you to select your show and then choose from the (short) list of episodes.
This is where things get a little more complicated. ABC requires you to watch videos on their own player. That means you have to download the player and watch the content in a separate window. The only saving grace is that there are related videos displayed along the bottom so that you don’t have to skip back and forth from the ABC site to the player just to see the next episode.
ABC employs video commercials throughout full episodes, usually in numbers similar to other sites. One noticeable difference is that ABC uses a lot fewer image ads than most other sites.
Another reason why ABC ranked so low is the mediocre features. We liked the episodes that came in High Definition, but there was very little else to grab our attention. You can’t save videos to a playlist, rate them or even share them with other people.
The user support for ABC is pretty standard. There are FAQs to answer common questions, and you can also contact the site through email if you can't find the answer to your question there.
ABC just doesn’t have enough content to keep up with the competition and the special video player is just annoying. For more entertaining options, try TopTenREVIEWS' top three selections: Hulu, Fancast and Modern Feed.
