Modern Feed is an interesting entry into our review of Internet TV Service because it doesn’t actually host any Internet TV videos. However, it does have the most extensive catalog of shows and where to find them, which is one of the biggest reasons that Modern Feed received the “TopTenREVIEWS Bronze Award” in our review.
Modern Feed makes it supremely easy to find any shows you’re interested in, regardless of how new or old they are. It doesn’t even matter if your favorite show is on an obscure network because Modern Feed has indexed any Internet TV you can find on the Internet.
Modern Feed doesn’t play all these videos on its site; instead, it directs you to whatever site does house the video so you can view it. Modern Feed leaves a simple navigation bar across the top of the screen so that you can easily return to the Modern Feed site when you’re done.
Modern Feed is also a great repository for Internet TV if you are viewing from an iPhone or other web-capable mobile device. There is an entire section of the Modern Feed site that is dedicated to video that can play on mobile devices. This is an indispensible feature if you use an iPhone because it’s often hard to tell which sites will even have compatible video.
Ultimately, Modern Feed’s strength is also its downfall. The fact that Modern Feed can direct you to so many different sites means that you also have to deal with each site’s idiosyncrasies. If Modern Feed directs you to a site that requires a special player, you’ve got no choice but to download it. And you’ll have to readjust to new navigation schemes for every site too. It may be a small price to pay in order to find so many videos you like, but it can also get a little old if you have to go back and forth a lot. We’d rather see Modern Feed stream all the content directly from its site, but that’s probably too much to ask considering all the legal paperwork and red tape it would take to bring all those networks to one site.
In the meantime, we’re content to surf this veritable encyclopedia of Internet TV sites and find all the cool shows we didn’t even know we missed.
This is where Modern Feed really shines. You will be able to find almost anything you can possibly think of on this site, mainly because it has indexed all the Internet TV sites out there. If a show is on the Internet, it’s on this site.
In fact, there is almost too much selection on Modern Feed. As you browse through the list of networks, you’ll quickly become distracted by all the networks that you’ve never heard of before. We found ourselves exploring various categories and networks before realizing, 30 minutes later, that we had come here looking for something specific. And if you can manage stay focused, Modern Feed certainly is the best place to search for a specific show.
Even if you just want to peruse the popular shows, Modern Feed is still a great place to go because there are lists of new, popular and highest rated shows in the Internet TV multiverse. This makes it even easier to find something good if you’re not quite sure what to look for.
We’re happy to see that Modern Feed has shunned user-submitted content. While user videos can be quite entertaining, they really muddle the search when you’re just looking for syndicated TV shows. The only complaint that we could bring to Modern Feed is that they haven’t indexed the myriad of movies that some of the Internet TV sites have. In fact, we were hard-pressed to even find a made-for-TV movie in the Modern Feed archive. Frankly, there’s still plenty of content to keep you entertained, but it would round out Modern Feed’s offering if they also had movies available.
As we mentioned above, the Modern Feed model is both a blessing and a curse to those who want an easy way to view their favorite TV shows online. On the one hand, Modern Feed makes the finding process incredibly easy. You can search for a show by name, by network or by category. You can also browse lists of the most popular or the highest rated shows. But on the other hand, the fact that Modern Feed doesn’t host any of these videos means that you’ll have to deal with several other Internet TV sites in order to see the video.
Once you find the show and the episode you want, Modern Feed sends you out to the site that houses the video. This can create problems if the site in question isn’t well designed. Another common problem is being sent to sites that require you to download and install a special player before you can watch your videos. In the search for our favorite shows, we ended up installing three different video players from various sites that we visited. Again, it’s not horrible, but it can be pretty annoying.
Fortunately, Modern Feed does make it easy to cycle back and forth from these Internet TV sites to the Modern Feed interface. Whenever you visit another site, Modern Feed places a banner at the top of the browser window that allows you to still use the Modern Feed navigation and search functions. This banner is especially useful if you have an account on the site because it allows you to alter your playlist, rate videos and make other minor adjustments without needing to hit the “Back” button and return to the Modern Feed home page.
The playlist itself is a great benefit to ease of use. Since Modern Feed tends to lead you to several different sites to find all your favorites, the Playlist really helps you keep track of your shows and find them again easily.
The great thing about the Modern Feed home page is that there are no advertisements. Everything you see has to do with promoting shows, and there are no annoying video ads. There is one caveat: each page is so full of links to shows and networks that it looks cluttered and can even look like a page entirely made of ads, at first glance. Once you get past the myriad of recommendations and start searching for specific shows, it becomes apparent that you won’t see any advertising.
Be warned, though; this does not mean that Modern Feed takes out the advertisements on whatever Internet TV sites it directs you to. You’ll still have to put up with whatever these sites put in your way.
The number and type of features on Modern Feed actually depend directly on which sites Modern Feed directs you to. Some have HD content, others don’t. The same holds true for embedding video, lowering the lights and popping the video out to a new window.
Modern Feed does support some important features on their own site. For instance, you can still send an email invitation to friends encouraging them to watch a video. You can also save your favorite videos to your playlist, get details about episodes and rate individual videos right in the Modern Feed interface. Of course, you can also do these things on the video sites you’re directed to.
One of the best features of the Modern Feed site is the category dedicated solely to helping you find videos that are compatible with your iPhone or iPod. If you want to view shows on a mobile device, Modern Feed is easily the best resource for you. At the time of this review, Modern Feed could direct you to nearly 400 shows that are compatible with the iPhone, and the number will only grow as mobile media becomes more commonplace.
Modern Feed provides email support and fairly extensive FAQs to help you in the event of problems with the site. But we were also happy to see a user guide that helps you understand how the site works and how to use it.
Modern Feed isn’t a traditional Internet TV site; it’s more like an enormous compendium of all the TV episodes you can find on the Internet (legally, anyway). And while it’s a bit bothersome to find the episode you’re looking for only to be sent to a completely different site to watch it, you can’t argue with Modern Feed’s simple appeal. Modern Feed makes it easy to search multiple sites at once and bring all your viewing preferences together in one place.
Modern Feed truly is your one-stop-shop for finding Internet TV video. Looking for a more traditional option? See TopTenREVIEWS' top ranked Internet TV site Hulu.
